Free Entertainment

The weather is turning sunny and warm and kids are getting a break from school. It is time to unwind and have some fun. Preferably for free.

City Parks

If you are looking for things to do that are free then there are actually quite a few but I'll start with what is close and plentiful – a city park. Save time and effort but still have a lot of fun.

There is no denying that city parks aren't exactly free because they are a result of our taxes. However, that being said, there is no reason you should not take advantage. You will probably be pleasantly surprised at how well our taxes are spent sometimes.

City parks can have benches, picnic tables, swimming pools, playgrounds, barbeque pits, and drinking fountains. For the athletic types there are parks with tennis courts, basketball courts, bike paths and jogging trails. There are parks with ponds, near lakes, and by rivers. Best of all, they almost always have free parking, restrooms, trees (for shade) and a big grass area.

With all of these amenities at your disposal your only limitation is your imagination. You can exercise, meditate or do yoga. You can bring a ball, a frisbee or your other favorite toys and enjoy the open grass areas. You may also just bring a book or even your favorite e entertainment device and a blanket or chair and relax in the great outdoors. But my favorite activity is a picnic. Pack a sandwich or gather friends and / or family and have a potluck. Bring prepared food or bring something to cook on the barbeque. You have to eat anyway so I wouldn't even consider this an extra expense.

Check the local news and you may be lucky to find a free event that is occurring at a park near you.

e Entertainment

The weather is nice and there are beautiful parks you can visit. Grab a folding chair or a blanket and find a tree to sit under or just enjoy a relaxing day on your patio or balcony and break out your Kindle Reader, iPhone or laptop and enjoy some free online entertainment.

Whether you are looking for a book to read, a game to play, a movie or television show to watch, or music to listen to there is a way to get it for free. Here are some safe (no catches, no gimmicks) sources:

  • Movies / Television – Network sites (CBS, NBC, Discovery Channel, etc), Hulu, YouTube, Food Network, Amazon Instant Video
  • Games – MSN Games, Amazon Free Games, Pogo.com, Physics Games.net
  • Music – Amazon Music, Pandora, Playlist.com, YouTube (Music videos)
  • Online – Kindle eBooks, BarnesandNoble.com, and a collection of articles through sites like CNN.com, Reuters.com and People.com to name a few.

Physical Games & Exercise

Looking for physical activity to release some tension? You already know that there are things like going for a walk or run, or doing calisthenics, mediatation or yoga. But another free way for adult and children to have fun and either get the heart pumping or the brain working is with games.

There are the oldies but goodies like Simon Says, Capture the Flag, and 3-legged races but if you need more ideas for different ages try the following:
