Walking canes are actually a stick for whoever needs better support when they are on their feet. It can be in all kinds of designs and shapes. I’ve been watching a lot of Japanese cartoons base on the Old England around the 18th to 19th century, I saw the characters the comic artist created their characters with walking canes. I wonder is cane a fashion statement today or it has been outdated?
On the streets you pass every day, the places you go; do you see anybody with a cane? Canes are usually for the elderly because they need a better balance when they walk or stand. After a few tests, walking canes slowly improved into different styles they gives better lifestyle to the elderly. However, some of the senior citizens don’t hold a cane for the sake of balancing or supporting. It’s to show their professionalism. Some canes are designed elegantly and stylish. These slick canes are branded and they can be very pricey.
In the Old England times, canes are able to present one’s status but now, the modern society doesn’t continue this tradition anymore. I can’t say it has been outdated or it’s now an ‘in’ thing to have walking sticks with you. In Japan, Japanese comics or cartoon fans will organize events often. On weekends, you may notice people dress up in bizarre clothes, mostly teenagers. To them, it’s a tradition called Cosplay. As I mentioned above, there are Japanese comics and cartoons base on the Old England times, so it’s a trend for anybody who cosplays as the characters of the origin.
I may agree that it has been outdated either. Have you ever heard of a company, Comoy’s of London? It established since 18th century but now they have stopped producing walking canes like before. This proves that these canes are no longer in the market and it has been forgotten as a fashion statement. Although these sticks are no longer a trend, there are still websites which sell exotic walking canes. I searched on the Internet on canes for fashion and found out that they are selling the cane of the main character from the famous medical-based TV series, House. Is this a sign that canes are back to the fashion world?
Canes are commonly assembled in a technical way rather than a fashionable manner. As the elderly needs support, some canes have larger bases, so-called crutches. Other than that, we have hiking sticks for better grip so we won’t fall and roll down the hill. For convenience, these sticks have been modified into foldable sticks. It’s easier to keep and it’s lighter than wooden walking canes due to its material. Again, in the Old England times, some may possess a cane with a sword hidden in it and the cane as its sheath. Isn’t it wonderful?
Canes are very useful in terms of its functions; they can be classy in terms of fashion sense. My opinion is, it’s a fashion statement today and will continue to be a fashion icon for a long time.
