The Use of The Aloe Vera Plant Throughout History

Throughout history many cultures were aware of the aloe vera plants health benefits. Many cultures held the aloe vera plant in high regard for this reason. These plants were considered as valuable as the finest spices.There was even a spiritual significance attached to the this plant by different classes of these cultures. Today the aloe vera plant is known for its health benefits as well. The cosmetics industry uses its ingredients to make various types of gels and creams for revitalizing the skin. It is also widely used in the alternative medicine industry.

As far back as 6000 years ago the Ancient Egyptians were aware of the healing properties of the aloe vera ingredients. Both Cleopatra and Nofretete greatly valued the aloe vera juice and used it as a part of their daily skin and beauty care.When high ranking individuals died they were often embalmed with aloe vera because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungi qualities. It was though if the body could be kept from decomposing it could enter into eternal life both physically and spiritually. When a Pharaoh died you could only attend a funeral if you paid with a pound of aloes to enter. For many in the Egyptian culture the aloe vera plant was considered the “plant of eternity”.

The ancient Israelites from the time of King Solomon to Jesus held the plant in high regard and new of its health benefits. The plant is mentioned in a number of scriptures found in the Bible.

Numbers 24:6 -“Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the LORD, like cedars beside the waters.”

Psalms 45:8 – “All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.”

Proverbs 7:17 – “I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon,”

Song of Solomon 4:14 -” Spikenard and saffron,calamus and cinnamon, with every kind of incense tree with myrrh and aloes and all the finest spices.”

John 19:39-40 to 39 -“ He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.[a] 40 Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.”

During the time of Alexander The Great the peoples of Greece also knew of aloe plants health benefits, especially for healing wounds. Aristotle persuaded Alexander to invade the Island of Socotra to secure its abundant aloe groves so that the aloe vera juice they contained could be used to heal the wounds of Alexanders vast army. Alexander went to the extent of having transportable carts of planted Aloe for practical reasons in order to have fresh supplies at the ready during his numerous battle campaigns.

Of course today we have a better understanding of why the ingredients of the aloe vera plant are useful for healing various human ailments.The plant also contains a vast number of different nutrients that are for the proper functioning of the human metabolism.
