An Excerpt from the Upcoming Screenplay adapted from the book entitled
“Hi, my name is Jose!: Defining America The Beautiful”
A crowd of people screaming as they see the presence of America, the star of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team as team captain and top scorer that lead the nation to win FIFA World Cup Championship. Soccer fans both men and women waving the flag of the United States of America are shouting aloud “USA! USA! USA! USA! We are the champions. We are the number one”. Paparazzi follow America as she is walking in front of the fans and acknowledging their support and patriotism and is followed by her agent who recently negotiated a million-dollar Movie Contract for America to play a lead role in a sports-related Hollywood film.
On the background, America is singing passionately The Star Spangled-Banner prior to an International Soccer Match between the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team and Spain.
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
6 MONTHS LATER
EXTERIOR – NIGHT
Jose is walking to America. She is a beautiful young woman who has just arrived at Jose’s Mom’s home in Los Angeles by Sunday, February 14, 2010 for Valentine’s Day.
JOSE
(smiling)
Hi, my name is Jose! As you know that was the first English sentence I learned almost 7 years ago when I first came to the U.S. from Honduras. How are you, America?
AMERICA
(exited)
I am doing really well, Jose.
Wow, what a handsome young man in that tuxedo!
You are a Super Star already, huh?
JOSE
(looking at her straight)
Thanks for the compliment, America.
The reason that I am well-dressed tonight is because of you.
In fact, this is the best tuxedo that I have, and I use it only for special events. Tonight, I am having the best event in my life because I am open to fall in love for the first time in my life.
AMERICA
(surprised)
Wow, I just don’t have any word to say. I am just speechless sweetheart. You are so handsome. I love your dimples and smile. Your smile is contagious. I am flattered with what you just say.
JOSE
(looking romantic)
America, you are the woman of my dreams.
AMERICA
(quiet and suspicious)
What do you mean by that?
JOSE
(Whispering)
You are the one that I have been praying to God every night for so many years. My prayers starts with these words: Oh Lord, I pray for that Godly woman that you have for me. A woman of noble character who is loyal, honest, true sweetheart, intelligent, smart, hot, and sexy. Oh Lord I pray for the best woman that you have for me. The best in the world. Nothing but God’s best.
AMERICA
(Smiling)
Well, I have been trying to contact you for so long but your cell phone is not working. I was about to give up on you because you are not reachable at all. I called you like thousand times. I was glad that finally today I was able to reach you at your mother’s home phone number. You are so difficult to get a hold of, Jose.
JOSE
I am taking full responsibility for my personal finances and being financially responsible to pay my phone bills and other financial obligations on time. My cell phone will be reactivated in two weeks. I would be focused as I used when I first came to the U.S. with no words of English in my mouth but with my determination and hunger to learn English by speaking with my beloved neighbors in South Central Los Angeles, going to the Library to study for the ASVAD test and GED to get into the U.S. Army and learn English as a Second Language (ESL) at Los Angeles Southwest College. Thanks for your patience America and I know that we are here together for a reason.
AMERICA
Yeah, I agree that the Lord has a wonderful plan for us. I still remember you when I first met you in Westin Hotel. You made my day with your movie-star looks and effervescent personality. Wow, you have such a beautiful presence Jose. I love your catch phrase “Hi, my name is Jose!” In fact, I have been saying that over and over again and my friends are always wondering why I keep saying that.
JOSE
(Laughing)
Hahahaha. lol. Hi, my name is Jose!
AMERICA
(Laughing)
Hahahahahahaha. You’re funny, Jose.
JOSE
(Laughing)
It is a catch phrase. It will be in Hollywood soon.
AMERICA
(Laughing)
I guess you are the new competition of Denzel Washington and Will Smith, huh?
JOSE
(Laughing)
I am just Jose. An ordinary human being from the Jungles of Honduras, a Third World Country. Well, I am very proud of my native country it is a Five-Star Country. That’s why you are tonight, I want to make sure that you receive a Five-Star service tonight directly from heart.
AMERICA
(Laughing)
Hahahahaha. Come on and get in the car now, funny boy.
JOSE
(romantic)
Before we get in the car America, I like to give you a surprise for our Valentine’s Day today.
AMERICA
(Wondering)
What’s that surprise Jose?
JOSE
(surprising her)
I found these most beautiful flowers only for you America.
AMERICA
(Awe)
Awwwwww. Thanks Jose. No wonder people call you The New All-American Boy with your old-fashioned manners and unique American decency.
JOSE
(Walking towards and opening the car’s door)
Thanks America for this romantic date.
AMERICA
(Compelled)
I am proud to be here with you Jose. I feel that the same way you do about me. You are also the man of my dreams.
JOSE
(Inspired)
I was just reading a quote by St. Augustine given to me. It goes like this, America. Listen carefully: “Love is itself the fulfillment of all our works. There is the goal; that is why we run toward it, and once we reach it, in it we shall find rest.”
AMERICA
(blown away)
Oh my God. what a beautiful quote. Can I have that copy for me to keep reading that quote every day?
JOSE
(humbly looking at her)
Yes, America. Everything that belongs to me belong to you. Here we go and keep this in a safe place.
AMERICA
(Inspired)
Thanks, my darling. You are one of a kind.
JOSE
(Compelled)
America, this is the first time that I feel at rest. I am in love with you. This is the first time that I finally fall in love. When I was four, my father left home. He left my mother with her three children. As you know, I am the eldest. I suffered a lot from that separation. I made it mean that I was worthless. You know, no valuable at all. I tried hard all my life to prove to the world that I am somebody. From kindergarten all the way to UCLA, I was always the school’s most popular kid and The Golden Boy being a straight-A student, Super Star Athlete, the most active student in school. I did that just to compensate that I am worthless. Even though I was so well-liked by everyone. I never have the opportunity to establish true authentic relationships with other human beings. I have never have any true romantic and intimate relationship with a woman that truly love with all my heart, mind, and soul until I met you. I was able to complete my relationship with my father and I am still doing my best to complete all my relationships in my life. I want all my relationships to be whole and complete. So I feel free for the first time in my life, America.
AMERICA
(Crying)
Wow, I am honored to be the only one for you, Jose.
JOSE
(Crying)
I am at rest, America. There is no place to go. I do not need any more degrees, awards, recognitions, praise. I do not need fame. I do not need approval. I do not need anything. All I need is LOVE.
AMERICA
(Crying)
You have it now, Jose. You have all my love for you.
JOSE
(Crying)
Come to me, my beloved America.
AMERICA
(Opening her hands for a hug)
Ummmmm. You smell so good, Jose. I love smelling your chest.
JOSE
(Smiling)
Thanks, America. It is gift that my mother gave me. I keep this cologne reserved for the right time, place, and event.
It is a Ralph Lauren. It is the first time I used it just for you, honey.
AMERICA
(smiling)
You are so sweet, Jose. I want to keep you in my hands and hug you forever. You are so handsome and I love your muscular body. You have a six pack, huh?
JOSE
(Humbly speaking)
You know, I have been working out for seven hours a day for my tryout for LA GALAXY and I still have a dream of playing for the U.S. Men’s Soccer National Team while I am running my Presidential Campaign for the U.S. Student Association in Washington, D.C. to support American Families of Our Veterans with Financial Assistance with the non-profit organization “Support Our Troops Ranch”
AMERICA
(Smiling)
I know you will. I will keep you in my prayers sweetheart.
JOSE
(Compelled)
You are the Queen of my heart, America. You are the real deal to my life. Come to me my beloved and I promise you that I will give you all I have. All your dreams are fulfilled now because I am here to support you all the way through.
AMERICA
(supportive)
I know Jose that you have many beautiful dreams.
JOSE
(Eloquent)
One of my most beautiful dreams that I have just like all children in the world is to have peace in the world for the first time of human history. I am keeping in my prayers all the world leaders to advocate and negotiate peace just like John F. Kennedy when he negotiated peace regarding the Cuban Missiles in the 1960s. I am firm believer in my beautiful dream deeply rooted in The American Dream that started way back in 1776 that one day, all nations will be at peace with one another fulfilling The America’s Promise of Life, Liberty, and The Pursuit of Happiness for all. There will be peacetime for eternity America soon. Our women and men in the U.S. Armed Forces will come back home safe and victorious knowing that there will be peacetime worldwide for eternity America. It is a dream that is coming true thanks to Our God Almighty.
AMERICA
(Inspired)
I am dreaming in your same dream Jose of making peace in the world for the first time in history. I think that is everyone’s dream in the 21st Century.
JOSE
(Speaking Spanish)

AMERICA
(not understanding what he’s saying)
What are you saying Jose? I don’t speak Spanish.
JOSE
(Speaking in English)
Peace in the world my love.
AMERICA
(taken)

JOSE
(romantic)
If I kiss you now, America, I will not stop and we will never get to our destination to have a romantic dinner.
AMERICA
(romantic)
There is no destination here. You said it clearly Jose. There is no place to go. The here and now is all there is. Kiss me now, please; like there is no tomorrow.
JOSE
(romantic)
Thanks for hugging me so intensely. I am in love.
AMERICA
(Kissing Jose)

JOSE
(Madly in love)

(Smiling)
